The Senne and the adjacent Teutoburg Forest naturally have a great variety of different habitats. In the Senne, for example, there are often transitions from very dry to wet areas within just a few metres. Through various forms of land use, humans have increased the diversity of habitats. Numerous plants specialise in the different biotopes: Heath, dry sand grassland, flowing and still waters, moors and forests as well as grassland and fields produce an astonishing biodiversity.
