Senne north of Oesterholz NR

The “Senne north of Oesterholz” nature reserve

In the municipality of Schlangen, directly adjacent to the Senne military training area, there is the “Senne north of Oesterholz” nature reserve.

The 14.6 hectare area includes a barrow field, which today is predominantly overgrown with pine and spruce, partly also with birch. In the open landscape there are larger heaths and dry sand grasslands with typical species such as the heather carnation and the mountain sandbells. On the northern edge there is a sand pit, on the bottom of which valuable humid habitats for amphibians, dragonflies and many other animals and plants have emerged. Outside the military training area, the areas in the nature conservation and FFH area represent important stepping stone biotopes of these otherwise rare habitats.
